With a level design philosophy just like the ones in Celeste and Super Meat Boy, Sunblaze is hard, but thankfully not frustrating. The electronic soundtrack is befitting of the game’s technological themes and mood, without being too intrusive or distracting. The aesthetics do a great job of differentiating between Josie’s comfy house and the strange, cold training sim rooms. Gotta destroy that robotic eyeball first!Īlthough Sunblaze has many illustrations of Josie in the menu screens and store pages, the game uses pixel art aesthetics combined with visual effects such as blood splatter for your deaths (you will have plenty of these). Or you can go the other way and play the Hard Challenges if you manage to collect all the data cubes in any of Sunblaze’s six chapters. Even then, the game includes a Zen Mode to experience the story at a shorter and easier pace, and there are plenty of accessibility options making it easy to pick up and play the game. While the level layouts can range from mildly difficult to brutal, it doesn’t take too long to figure out how to get past the more difficult ones. The levels are no larger than your average widescreen monitor. With all of this considered, the game is a decent pick for short playthroughs. These quirks are combined with other elements such as falling platforms, deadly lasers, and bottomless pits in a puzzle-like manner, spanning across hundreds of challenging rooms! How real is the sim? For example, you can safely hold on to a ledge with spikes on top then jump and dash over the spikes. Sunblaze expects you to not just use Josie’s potential to the fullest, but also learn and utilize some of your environment’s obvious and hidden quirks. Stomping robotic enemies will also replenish your dash and jump. You can hang on ledges or metal poles, or slowly slide down walls. It’s how you use these abilities with the surrounding environments that make Sunblaze interesting and challenging. AVISO: Jugar a Sunblaze puede desarrollar tu inteligencia. This is done through Josie’s unbelievably simple move set: she can only double jump and dash. The goal is to finish each of the game’s rooms by going through a series of obstacles to reach the level’s exit chip. This one’s premium. This game was reviewed as part of the Indie Game Collective Showcase. So, my verdict? If you enjoy platformers, don’t hesitate. I got stuck somewhere in the second chapter for a while but thankfully there’s also a “Zen mode.” Sunblaze is also much larger than I anticipated: Six chapters and there’s quite a few missions in each chapter, which allows for very decent diversity in scenery, mechanics, bosses, etc. I got through the first chapter no worries, and even collected enough artifacts to unlock a hard mode. I’m not going to lie, the game’s quite challenging. No more time for thinking, it’s all down to reflexes. You need to sit there and plan out every move, thinking about where each platform is going to move when you trigger it, or how you’re going to time event triggers so you can jump and dash from A to B to C without being crushed, stabbed, burnt, or falling to your death. So, unlike most platformers, you can’t just rush into each level. The main thing that sticks out: Everything moves. Likewise, the gameplay I found immediately interesting. The pixels are really nicely polished, the characters very cute, and – what’s this? It has a sense of humour! Delightful. And it is! I gather it draws a lot of inspiration from Celeste but I haven’t played that yet (despite having purchased it more than 6 months ago) so I’m very much playing it for it’s own merits.īefore I even got into the game, I was sucked in by the tutorial. My very first impression: Cute graphics, fast-paced, looks like a fun platformer. ![]()
